Life before the internet
It’s hard to imagine a world without the internet. How the hell did people do it? Seriously, how did the world even function? I remember that world but I was a kid so its not like I had to do much functioning.
I feel I’ve experienced three different Internet worlds in my life. My first twelve years was no Internet. Then there was the dial up to dsl to fiber internet. Then came the smartphone/social media internet we’ve been accustomed to. I feel like we’re about to enter another realm. AI era of internet.
The Internet impacts most aspects of my life. But it seems like it consumes a lot of people’s life. So much so, that it’s becoming their real life. I don’t see that being a healthy situation. Even with the countless benefits it provides. I can’t help but wonder if we weren’t better off without it. As hard as it is to fathom being able to function without it. It’s just more and more of a toxic cesspool.
Then again, getting a Google map pin sure beats the hell out having a full notebook page of directions like I had when I’d go see friends at college. For every beneficial aspect of the internet. There is an underlying detriment.
Perhaps it was just me and the way I used the Internet. The Internet was at its best in the early 2000s. It was just a tool to use to benefit real life . It wasn’t a way of life. It was the best of both worlds.
I wish there was a way to limit it’s availability. To keep all of the useful aspects yet not allow the pointless soul quenching aspects of toxicity. But like I said, we’re on the brink of next level toxic.
Bots and AI will the biggest detriment to our species. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have been here before and similar things possibly led to our species having to restart. Instead of some catastrophic event.
I know this was supposed to be a pre internet post. But I can’t help but fear where the post Internet world in going…… 😬
